What is linen?

Linen is a woven fabric made from fibers derived from the flax plant; the plant is processed into yarn, which is then woven into cloth. Linen has a long history, with the oldest archaeological finds originating in Egypt and dating back to approximately 5000 BC. Flax is naturally an eco-friendly and durable material; today, it is primarily cultivated in regions with cool, rainy climates, meaning the plant rarely requires artificial irrigation, chemical fertilizers, or pesticides. The flax we use is grown mainly in Eastern Europe. Linen is a fantastic material, boasting a beautiful luster and an intriguing, irregular weave that enhances its unique character. Typical linen fabric has a slightly wrinkled appearance and a somewhat stiff, wonderfully crisp feel, yet it only grows more beautiful with time. However, linen comes in various weights and can be woven in different ways; for linen shirts, finer, lighter-weight fabrics are often chosen, allowing for greater attention to detail.

What are the benefits of a linen shirt?

Linen shirts are most popular during spring and summer; as temperatures rise, we want to wear something cool and comfortable. Linen is an excellent choice for clothing because it absorbs moisture and allows your skin to breathe—qualities that are particularly beneficial when wearing a linen shirt on a hot summer day. This characteristic also gives linen antibacterial properties, as it simply does not provide a favorable environment for bacteria to grow and thrive. Even if you sweat on a hot day, you won't develop the same body odor you might with a synthetic garment. With a linen shirt, you can feel confident whether you’re traveling or heading to a party!

How do I care for my linen shirt?

Like many other natural materials, linen garments benefit from being aired out rather than washed too frequently. This helps preserve both the garment and the environment. Most of our women's linen shirts are machine washable at 40°C, though some of our Italian linen fabrics require washing at 30°C; check the care label inside the garment to be sure. Always wash your linen shirt with similar colors and turn it inside out to protect delicate buttons. Use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener, as it damages the environment and the fabric fibers, while also reducing the linen's moisture-wicking properties. You can gently stretch and shape your linen shirt while it is damp and let it drip-dry. You can also influence the shirt's look based on how you treat it after washing: for a polished style, iron the shirt until completely smooth while it is still damp; for a more casual look, tumble dry the shirt briefly.
