We all encounter static electricity on our clothes from time to time, especially during the winter months when the air is cold and dry.
But why do garments become static and what can you do to reduce static electricity from your woolen clothes?
Why does static electricity occur on woolen clothes?
Wool has excellent insulating properties, which is due to the curled structure of the wool fiber, which creates small insulated air pockets. This insulation keeps us warm, but at the same time makes it difficult for electrons to move freely. This can in turn lead to statically charged particles that are more difficult to neutralize in dry air.
The phenomenon is further amplified if the wool garment is placed against other materials, especially synthetic fibers.
Tips for reducing static electricity:
Metal clips or safety pins
Attach small metal clips or safety pins to the inside of your wool clothing where it comes into contact with your skin or other garments. The metal can act as a conductor and reduce the build-up of static electricity.
Wear natural fibers
If possible, avoid combining wool with synthetic materials. Natural fibers generate less static electricity compared to synthetic fibers.
Humidity
One of the most effective ways to combat static electricity is to increase the humidity in the environment. Use a humidifier in your home or place containers of water near heat sources to humidify the air.
Spray water
A quick way to reduce static electricity is to simply spray water on the inside and outside of the garment. The moisture helps to neutralize the static-charged particles.
Moisturize your skin
Make sure your skin is not dry. It is a good idea to apply a moisturizing cream to your skin before putting on woolen clothing, this helps create a moist barrier that reduces the risk of static buildup.
Air dry and air out
Feel free to hang and air out your garment after use. The humidity enhances the natural self-cleaning ability of the wool fiber while the moisture reduces friction and thus reduces the risk of static build-up.
